Alpe d'Huez

The Island in the Sun

Alpe d'Huez

Known as the Island in the Sun, Alpe d’Huez is famous for average 300 days of sunshine it gets each year. High altitude for snow-surety but south-facing and open, imagine basking in the sun, soaking up the incredible views spanning across the valley.

The ski area itself is an adventurer’s dream. With Alpe d’Huez at its heart there are a sprinkling of quintessential villages and resorts dotted around the domain, waiting for you to cruise down into to explore. On a quiet day, it can feel like you’re getting off the beaten track and finding a hidden corner of France.

The Alpe d’Huez bowl, which encircles the resort and reaches right up to an altitude of 3330m, is wide, open and gentle, perfect for those or those finding their ski legs for the first time, whilst still providing some high adrenaline glacier skiing for those who crave it. The 16km long Sarenne run, is one of Europe’s finest and longest pisted runs and a must-do for the serious skier.

Not short of on-piste hot-spots either, you can party the afternoon away at the infamous Folie-Douce or indulge in some fine-dining in one of the many cosy lodges, with terraces spilling out onto the snow.

With a more relaxed atmosphere than some of its 5* counterparts, Alpe d’Huez has a real locals vibe. Expect friendly, informal dining, home cooking and a local’s welcome. There is a thriving year-round community here who are proud of their perch on top the hill, and who love showing-it off to visitors.
