Chiado, Lisbon

These days, the cutting-edge art scene has moved to Marvila and in its place, Chiado’s elegant streets play home to numerous international brands and hip boutiques (the recently opened Hay Carmo is a favourite). If it’s shopping that you are in the mood for, then Chiado is where it's at. Step off the busy through-fares and you’ll still find some of the city’s oldest and most iconic stores, from famed croissant house Benard to glove store Ulisses and tight specialist Rei das Meias (both going strong since the 20’s), as well as Livraria Bertrand, which dates back to 1732 and holds the record for the oldest bookstore in the world. While Chiado’s seemingly unstoppable popularity may have come at the cost of any intimate neighbourhood vibe -you’d be hard pushed to find a local green-grocer here - scratch the surface and its Old-World charm is resoundingly here to stay. Rising up from Cais do Sodré to Bairro Alto and across to Baixa, its central location makes it an ideal place for exploring Lisbon’s sights by foot and some of the city’s best restaurants.
